snow removal tips
The Chicago land area, home base for Accelerated, was hit by what many are calling the "Blizzard of 2011" this week. Record snowfall (20 inches in some areas), amazing wind speeds, and brutal wind chills hit Chicago on Tuesday evening stranding motorists, wreaking havoc on homes and businesses, and shutting down Chicago's lakeshore drive. Many people were stranded in their own houses on Wednesday because the snow plows couldn't remove the snow fast enough.
Many tried to brave the extreme conditions and sadly a few people did not make it. It is reported that 7 people died in the "Blizzard of 2011" and that 5 of these deaths were a result of heart attacks while shoveling snow. As a physical therapy company, Accelerated is committed to the safety of our patients and strive to communicate topical information that may improve the health of our patients lives. Thus, below you will find a few easy ways to improve efficiency and reduce heart attack risk while shoveling and removing snow.
Easy tips include:
Shovel as soon as the snow falls and continue throughout the day
Shovel with a light plastic shovel
Shoveling with a wide base (feet shoulder width apart)
Shovel while "lifting with your knees"
