Graston Technique

The Graston Technique is changing the way patients and clinicians view treatment of acute and chronic soft tissue injuries. This innovative form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue as well as stretch connective tissue and muscle fibers.

The Graston Technique utilizes six specially designed stainless steel instruments that allow clinicians to isolate adhesions and restrictions, and treat them very precisely. Lubricant is applied to help the instruments glide over the skin. Using a cross-friction massage, the therapist "combs" over and "catches" on injured fibrotic tissue, which reintroduces small amounts of trauma to the affected area. This process helps initiate healing by causing temporary inflammation, thus increasing the rate and amount of blood flow in and around the area.

What should patients expect?

  • Prior to an appointment with a therapist, patients may be advised to complete a brief warm-up exercise since it is easier to work on warm tissue.
  • At the clinician’s office, ultrasound or heat treatment may first be applied to the injured area to warm the soft tissue.
  • Treatment time is usually 30 to 60 seconds per area treated.
  • The typical course of treatments ranges from 6 to 10 visits.
  • After each treatment, the area is stretched and ice may be applied if there is local soreness.
  • Rehabilitation exercises will be prescribed in conjunction with soft tissue work.
