Lymphedema Management
The Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers Lymphedema Management Program offers the most advanced lymphedema treatment available. This condition causes increased fluid build up in the tissues. An accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissue causes chronic swelling; and if effective lymphedema treatment is not initiated, lymphedema will worsen.
There are two types of lymphedema: primary is often a congenital condition that may be caused by natural changes in the body; secondary lymphedema may develop after an injury, surgery, or radiation treatment.
Some signs and symptoms of lymphedema are:
- Heaviness, fullness, or noticeable swelling
- Decreased strength and mobility
- Tightness, tingling or “bursting” sensations
- Changes in skin color and texture
Through our comprehensive Lymphedema Management Program, patients are guaranteed a solid understanding of and effective solutions for this chronic condition. The number of lymphedema treatments depends on the extent of the condition. Patients are generally treated five times per week for the first two weeks. Visits are gradually decreased to once a month as treatment progresses and the condition improves.
Our well-trained, professional staff also provides patients with education and instruction in home exercises for the long-term self-management of lymphedema.
Additional aspects of our Lymphedema Treatment Program include:
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Compression bandaging
- Therapeutic exercises
- Compression pumps
- Compression garments
- Patient and family training
